How To Write An Effective Classified Ad
Published: 10/27/2008 by Alan Vandenbroek
Writing a classified ad that really works is not as easy as it sounds – you have to convey a lot of information in just a few words, and the competition can often be stiff!
When wording your ad, always try to think in terms of achieving the following three goals:
1) Attract Attention
This is the job of your first line, or headline.
State exactly what you are selling. People scanning the classifieds are often looking for something specific, and details will capture their attention.
2) Create Interest and Desire
Lines two and three of your ad should contain enough information to compel your reader to contact you. Describe the item(s) and include any particular features or details that may help to make your ad irresistible.
3) Motivate a Response
Make sure you provide all the relevant contact information, including a name and phone number at the very least. Ideally, you should also include the best times to call.
If your words achieve the above, you will have a winning ad on your hands. But, of course, before you submit make sure you proof-read a couple of times to be certain there are no spelling errors.
